Center's regular health check had an ear-y twist this week

SENIOR CENTER NEWS
By  Guinn Sweet

This past Tuesday, Veterans' Day, the Mineral Wells Senior Center recognized the veterans of the United States military with a roll call of those present and a personal thank you for the men and women of all branches, wars and peace time service. It was pointed out that were it not for those brave men and women who served, out nation would not be the world power for peace that it is now. Following the recognition service, the veterans were served a complimentary lunch as a further token of the appreciation felt for each of these participating veterans.

Activities prior to the veterans' recognition on Tuesday included the regular monthly Health Check, carried out by Craig Andress and the employees of the Mineral Wells Medical Supply, assisted by the nurses of the Palo Pinto General Hospital Home Health staff. Mr. Andress has provided this service to Senior Center participants for more than 10 years, providing the testing materials and personnel for the tests so important to the continued and improved health of the senior community. The second Tuesday of each month, testing for blood sugar levels, blood pressure and weight with a quarterly screen for cholesterol is performed by these faithful professionals. It's appreciated!

This week, the Health Check process was augmented by the presence of Anne and Jim Winquist of Weatherford's Anne's Hearing Aid facility, with free hearing tests for all who desired. The Winquists also provided applications and data for obtaining a voucher for free "amplified hearing telephone" for those who qualified by hearing loss. Their generosity also included a "sittin' bench" for those who wish or need to have a comfortable place to wait for transportation of just get some sunshine. The new bench can be found, waiting for you, at the entry area of the center. Come down and try it! The Center expresses appreciation to the Winquists for this helpful service and bench.

The last of the Center's fund raisers is drawing to a close. First to be mentioned is the Avon (calling) offer of a wide variety of gift items and stocking stuffers for Christmas giving, plus their usual line of fine toiletries and cosmetics. There are some items for as little as 99 cents, while collectibles and others will be more, but reasonably prices. Avon representative Lisa Clutts has displayed a variety of things for sale on site, and has furnished catalogues for those who need to be ordered. The Senior Center is to be giving a varying percentage of the price of every item sold in this sale, and proceeds will be placed in the general operations fund of their budget. A date for the delivery of the ordered items will be made know to the individual purchaser, as well as date for payment.

Listen, that's Avon calling!

Don’t' forget that bids are being taken on the lift chair and the scooter that has been donated by the Jack Whitely family. The chair is definitely a convenience for anyone who has difficulty with arthritis, lower back problems or weakened conditions in the knees and lower legs. The scooter can be used by anyone needing short, quick transport to do errands or anything like that. It is also a valuable tool for mobility around the house, shopping, church or anywhere else the "walking-challenged" individual may find themselves. Bids may be made on both, or only one of the items. Sealed bids will be taken at the Center office and will be opened on Nov. 21, and the highest reasonable bids will be awarded the chair and scooter.

It has already been announced, but as a reminder, the November birthday party will be held early this month because the center will be closed for Thanksgiving weekend on the usual last Friday of the month. On Nov. 21, at 11:30 am, the party will begin with a happy birthday song, pictures of the honorees and the awarding of the beautifully flowers from Cole's Florist to one of them. Lunch will follow at noon, with ice cream (from Braum's) and cake served afterwards. Don't forget to make a lunch reservation by noon Thursday, the 20th if you wish to celebrate with us
